Drabble 1: Morning

He knew DiZ hated it when he came down here. It was one of the reasons he did it. Oh, he'd help the man as long as he was helping Sora, but he couldn't stand the way he clung to his vengeance with greedy hands.

Riku didn't like knowing that he, in all his stupid, bumbling immaturity, had learned a lesson far earlier than the man everyone purported to be "Wise."

But it was only one of the reasons. The big one was that even when he slept, Sora's heart managed to keep the shadows away, and he'd had enough of shadows for one day.

Riku slipped through the open door of the lab once he was sure DiZ was somewhere else and felt his way to the exit half hidden in the back end of the room.

Donald then Goofy, or Goofy then Donald, he told himself absently; he couldn't remember. He'd never paid close enough attention to where they'd been shoved to have memorized which came first and he wasn't close enough to either to recognize the subtle differences in the way Naminé's magic reacted to them. It didn't matter much either way, since he was just counting so that he didn't walk facefirst into the wall on accident.

Sora's friends, and then Sora himself, sleeping alone in a room that was too cold to be as warm as Sora's heart felt when it recognized his. Riku felt his mouth pull up for the first time in what felt like years and quietly told his friend hello. Sora's heart was awake, even if the rest of him was not, and Riku always exalted in the fact that it still recognized him, fallen into darkness as he was.

"Still sleeping, you lazy bum?" he asked softly, "Still making me do all the work," he continued when there was nothing but the hum of Naminé's magic working Sora's memories back to proper order. "You're terrible, Sora."

He pulled off his gloves and dropped them on the floor as he entered the room. He didn't need them here.

DiZ found him a few hours later, when he'd completed his ritual and curled up at the base of Sora's crystal to rest. Riku held back a sigh at the man's familiar footsteps and halfheartedly tried to arrange his coat so that the blood he knew he'd managed to get all over the floor wasn't quite so obvious.

"You are not helping Sora awaken any faster," DiZ finally said when Riku pretended that his hearing wasn't good enough that he'd heard him entering the lab two rooms away.

Riku pressed his head further into his updrawn legs and hid a grimace. "Yeah, I know." And trying to guilt trip me about it isn't going to make me move any faster.

"You're also not making yourself feel any better."

"No," he agreed easily, trailing his gloveless hand across one of the spike's of Sora's prison. It felt warm, at odds with the blinding, white cold of the room, and Riku pressed himself closer to the material with a sigh. "No, I'm not."

"Ah," DiZ said, then, "I see. Come find me when you are finished and I will heal that wound you think you're hiding. If you think to keep it hidden from me, you should't leave bloody footprints from your portal to here, Riku."

There was a weight of dissaproval in the man's voice, but they were all allowed their little stupidities without comment, and if Riku had to put up with NaminĂ© pawning her drawings off on him, (regardless of the fact that he didn't ever carry them for longer than it took him to find a trashcan) and DiZ creepily muttering under his breath about his apprentice (you'd think the man had stolen his firstborn child instead of just his name the way DiZ went on), than they could deal with him doing whatever it was that he did.

Riku nodded companionably in the direction the man's voice had come and ignored the frosty silence. DiZ stood for a moment longer, then sighed and slid a heavy blanket to him from across the slick floor. "Don't catch cold," he warned, and Riku tilted his head in aknowledgement as he flipped the blanket open. He didn't plan to.

He waited out the rest of the night with Sora.

When the subtle relaxing in his heart declared it was morning, he pushed himself to his feet, groggily hoped he hadn't left too much blood on the floor, and stumbled off to find DiZ.
